    FAQ

The curious nature of cats will make it easy for them to figure out, but follow these steps for the best results:

    • Place your new Modkat litter box in the same location as your old litter box.
    • Fill the liner with 3-4 inches of litter, adding at least one scoop of litter from their old box.
    • Once they smell the familiar scent they should know what to do.
    1. Insert the included Modkat Liner (Type-A) into the Modkat base. Be sure to orient the liner so the rounded corners align with the rounded corners of the base and the liner is snug and taught from top to bottom.
    2. Hold the lid vertically by the logo lock. Lower and align the lid hinges into the hinge openings on the base. Once fully seated, rotate forward until the lid's logo lock snaps into position on the base.
    3. Store the Modkat Scoop on either side of the base by sliding it into one of the hinge openings.

If your cat has trouble jumping or climbing or is on the large side, Modkat may not be the right solution for them. Modkat is best suited for cats 12lbs (5.5kgs) or less.

If your cat doesn't meet these criteria, you may want to give one of our other litter boxes a try.

A better solution to the typical set up

I ordered the Mod cat when my son moved back in with his cat. I needed something more contained to help reduce litter tracking, the smell/mess, and to keep my dog away. It works almost 100 percent for all three. Litter tracking is now limited to right around the box and is mostly from what is stuck on the paws when the cat jumps out. The smell is more contained but not significantly so - it's an improvement. It's also easy to keep the dog away because it's no longer easy access. I do not think the flip top works well to scoop the litter - I just take the lid off. The consumable liner is ridiculously expensive for what it is - this part of the system could use some rethinking. Either make it recyclable or washable or something, because while this works it's an expensive, wasteful part of the system. The odor pack is a waste, does not truly help the smell in a significant way. The cat was not initially happy with the idea of going into a cube, but she figured it out and is using it without issues. Overall this is an upgrade and improvement to the more basic set ups and can be a reasonable mid range price point compared to more expensive solutions like the automatic boxes or furniture style. Because the liners are expensive and that part of the system is different than typical, I'm not sure my son will keep up with it when he moves into his new place.

Harder to Open Compared to my Last Modkat

I purchased a Modkat litterbox in 2015 and it was great for keeping our dog away from the litter box. One of the nodules broke but the box is still being used by my sister's cat. I ordered this again since we got a new kitten and it does seem noticeably more difficult to open the lid for cleaning than my old version. The cat likes it and had no problem adapting, and our future dog had better keep its nose out of the box.

    Cats Use Them

We've acquired two cats from a shelter. Neither had to be shown what to do; we purchased both the NYTimes Wirecutter recommended front entry Modcat and the Kiki & Nico (son's cats) recommended top entry Modcat.
