Started in Brooklyn. Inspired by two cats.

Rich Williams was living in his Brooklyn apartment with his two cats, Mika and Sashi, when he realized something was missing: a litter box that actually worked and looked good doing it. He searched everywhere and found nothing that met both form and function. Frustrated, he vented to his wife, who simply said:

“You’re a designer. Why don’t you just make one?”

Designing a better litter box.

Rich took the idea to his then business partner, Brett Teper, a fellow designer and industrial design grad. Together, they spent two years prototyping and refining.

In 2009, they debuted the original Modkat Top-Entry Litter Box at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), and it won Editor’s Choice for Best Home Accessory.

That was the beginning of Modkat. And a new standard in litter box design.
