The Modkat founders’ story: From inspiration to innovation.

Hi, I'm Rich Williams, co-founder of Modkat. Our story begins in my Brooklyn apartment, where my cats, Mika and Sashi, faced a common problem that I’m sure many cat owners can relate to: finding a cat litter box that works effectively, reduces litter tracking, and looks good in a contemporary home. Despite searching high and low, I couldn’t find a single product that met all these needs. Frustrated, I shared my dilemma with my wife. She looked at me and said, “You’re a designer. Why don’t you just design one?”

That simple suggestion sparked an idea that would change everything. I approached my then-business partner in graphic design, Brett Teper, who has a background in industrial design. Brett immediately saw the potential in the idea, and together, we embarked on a journey to create a cat litter box that combined practicality with aesthetic appeal.

The next two years were filled with countless prototypes and rigorous testing, with Mika and Sashi as our primary testers. We were determined to create something truly innovative. Our hard work culminated in the creation of the original Modkat Top-Entry Cat Litter Box, which we debuted at the 2009 International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). Winning the Editor's Choice Award for Best Accessory was a huge validation, and shortly after, we were honored with the prestigious Red Dot Design Award. These accolades confirmed that our vision had become a reality.

The success of the Modkat Top-Entry Cat Litter Box was just the beginning. We continued to innovate, expanding our product line to include the versatile Modkat XL, designed for larger cats and multi-cat households, the Flip Litter Box, known for its user-friendly design and easy cleaning, and the Modkat Tray. Each product was crafted with the same attention to detail and commitment to quality that we started with.

What sets Modkat apart is not just our innovative design features, like the full height base (to keep the mess inside), the swivel lid (for easy access), or the reusable liners (non-rip and easy to clean), but also our commitment to sustainability and quality. Each Modkat cat litter box comes packaged in eco-friendly materials that can be repurposed into interactive cat toys, reducing waste. Our durable, reusable liners last up to 3 months, significantly cutting down on waste. We prioritize quality materials, ensuring our products are built to last and require fewer replacements.

Fifteen years after our journey began, Modkat continues to set the standard in cat care innovation. We have built a loyal customer base and received numerous accolades, a testament to our dedication to improving the lives of cats and their owners. And this is just the beginning. Our commitment to innovation and passion for enhancing pet care remains as strong as ever, and we are excited to continue bringing new, innovative products to market.
