Top 10 books about cats for summer reading. - Modkat

There's something mysterious about how cats and books go together. Bookstores often keep a resident kitty who prowls among the dusty volumes, and many famous writers were known ailurophiles (cat lovers). Think of Hemingway and his five-toed cats or of T.S. Eliot and his famous collection of poems Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

With so many connections between cats and books, we decided to uncover the top 10 books about cats.

    1. A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen

James was a struggling street musician, and Bob was a fractious street cat when they met in London. Their heartwarming story comes to life in the pages of James' book, and readers find themselves believing in goodness again when the ginger-colored tomcat helps James kick his addictions.

    2. I Could Pee on This: And Other Poems by Cats by Francesco Marciuliano

“On the edge of a laughing teacup
    Did Kubla Kat decree
The the corn fritter festooned with medals
    Shall make the brownies free."

So begins one of the poems in this quirky, eccentric, and laugh-out-loud funny collection of cat poems. Filled with sweet and charming photos, this book is the pièce de résistance of literary works authored by cats.

    3. The Warriors Series by Erin Hunter

The original six-volume set of middle grade novels has become a national bestseller. If you've read the books, you know why. Complex stories of intriguing fantasy worlds inhabited by cats such as Fireheart and Rusty, The Warriors can keep readers of all ages on the edges of their seats.

    4. Total Cat Mojo: The Ultimate Guide to Life with Your Cat by Jackson Galaxy with Mikel Delgado, PhD

As fans of Jackson Galaxy's work with cats of all stripes, we had to make sure you got a chance to know about his published work. This book is vintage Jackson, and it's filled with information about why cats act the way they do. As a reader, you'll learn how to make your home a cat's haven as well as what to do about troubling feline behaviors.

    5. Lost and Found Cat: The True Story of Kunkush's Incredible Journey by Doug Kuntz

For the child in your life, this picture book tells the contemporary story of Kunkush, a cat who belonged to an Iraqi refugee family. When his family fled from Iraq to Greece, they couldn't bear to leave Kunkush behind. So they took him along, hidden in a secret compartment. But upon arriving in Greece, Kunkush disappeared. What happened next will give you hope for the world.

    6. James Herriot's Cat Stories by James Herriot

No list of animal books could be complete without a mention of the beloved Yorkshire veterinarian James Herriot. Serving animals in England's Yorkshire Dales from the 1930s until shortly before his death in the 1990s, Herriot told stories of his patients (and their equally quirky human caregivers) that have long left readers laughing hysterically on one page and reaching for the tissues on the next.

    7. Men & Cats by Marie-Eva Gatuingt and Alice Chaygneaud

If you love beautiful cats - and gorgeous men - you need this compendium of 50 photographs of sexy French men and sensational cats. As the Huffington Post said, "We just have one question: Why did it take so long for someone to come up with this?”

    8. Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron

The library cat in Spencer, Iowa achieved worldwide fame when he became the hit of this charming book. But Spencer had been a local hero since the first day the librarian found him, shoved through the book deposit slot sometime during the cold Iowa winter night. Over the next 19 years, Spencer would come to epitomize a town's struggle to get back on its feet after a crisis.

    9. Homer's Odyssey by Gwen Cooper

Gwen's bestselling story of her blind cat Homer will make you believe in love at first sight. Homer's tale affected more than Gwen. Their story is proof that our animals teach us more than we teach them.

    10. Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot

This 1939 collection of whimsical cat poems by noted writer T.S. Eliot became the foundation for the musical Cats. Probably the best known cat compilation, Eliot's book of poems never hits a wrong note. He captures the warmth, companionship, eccentricity, and mystery of cats as only a writer of his stature could.
